Tres Leches - or three milks paired with dark chocolate and dutch cocoa make this an exceptional hot chocolate. Adding Arbol chilies will bring a new level of heat to this hot chocolate!
Recipe type: Drink
Cuisine: Mexican, Mayan
Serves: 6 cups
  • 1 quart whole milk
  • 2 Cups Half and Half
  • ¼ Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 package Dark chocolate (we love 75-95%)
  • 3 Tablespoons Dutch Processed Cocoa
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 3 Arbol Chilies, dried
  1. In a large saucepan heat up whole milk, half and half, and cinnamon sticks. If making Mayan hot chocolate, add the dried chilies.
  2. As soon as it comes to a light boil add chocolate chunks, cocoa powder and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk together with a whisk until combined and serve.
  3. When I'm making hot chocolate for kids and adults I pour it for the kids then add the chilies for the adults.
  4. Some of our favorite toppings are whipped cream, marshmallows (especially homemade is best) grated cinnamon and nutmeg, grated chocolate.
